Onancock Harbor

August 17, 2026

Onancock VA is soon to be our new home town.  Captain John Smith explored this naturally deep creek and harbor area in the early 1600s.  Deep water access from the Chesapeake Bay led to Onancock being an important trading port and connected to Baltimore in the 1800s via direct steamboat service between the two.  Today, Onancok Creek and harbor support recreational boating, paddle sports and industry with a sand and gavel operation that depends on deep water channels to receive and send product.  To me, Onancock harbor and town feel very much like the New England Atlantic fronting harbor towns  that I grew up knowing, having grown up in Massachusetts.  I moved to Lewes DE in 1977 and loved its similarity to New England coastal towns.  Now I prepare to move to Onancock next year.  I can’t seem to get too far from the sea and New Englandish towns.  Love them.
