I was photographing the surf in Ocean City yesterday (from subtropical storm Josephine) with my drone and saw a flock of Black Skimmers roosting on the beach. I was sure to keep the drone way away from them and I saw them, as a flock, lift off the beach a few times, fly a semi-circular route out over the water then return to the beach pretty much where they had taken off from. I was a block north of their resting spot and as I brought my drone in to land they took off, circled out over the water then flew very close to the drone as part of their circular flight. I paused the drone’s movement and photographed them in flight. A unique view of skimmers on an ocean beach was the result.
