Color Or No Color

July 2, 2025

The Delaware Coast has been a battleground of air masses recently with daily thunderstorms and dramatic skies. Weather like we have been having often turns the day’s activities on a dime.  Beautiful clear blue sky turns to heavily contrasted, bulbous clouds in minutes, it seems, and all outdoor activities cease and desist when arresting thunderheads announce their approach. People scurry off the beach resulting in long exodus lines of traffic taking beach lovers from their favored roost to god knows where.  WATCH OUT OUTLETS HERE WE COME!!  Boaters, likewise, get off open water, mach schnell, seeking protection in port.  With a little warning I head out to Roosevelt Inlet where I know I can often frame threatening weather inland against the inlet entrance and, ideally and optimistically, full throttle boats coming in of Delaware Bay hoping to beat the outflow gusts of the storm. As a lifelong fan of black and white photographs I routinely look at subjects I photograph thinking whether they evoke the reaction or attraction or story or interest or beauty (or all of these) best in color or monochromatically.  Today I offer the same scene, shot recently with my drone, and you can decide which tells the story best.  Let me know.
