I came across this spider on a hike several weeks ago on St John USVI. Its posterior resembles a conch shell. Seeking its identity all I found is an argiope spider, with ID sites showing pictures of spiders looking very much like this one but also many spiders that very dissimilar. Anybody have a better sense of what it is? Bill Fintel, you should be on this. Tony Florio, you too!
