Eyespot Mimicry

October 18, 2021

This little guy was moving very slowly this morning, as fall-like air has finally arrived here on the Delaware coast.  It fooled me a little as I took this photograph, with the darker scales next to its eyes it distracted me for a moment from where its actual eyes are.  The second photo, cropped in more tightly, better shows that feature.  I think this is a common garter snake although its specific color pattern doesn’t precisely match what I see in field guides.  If I am wrong in that identification please correct me.  In any event I was pleased to see it and have a chance to get my camera for a portrait session.
