Freezing Flight

February 17, 2024

I set out recently to I improve my skills in photographing birds in flight.  I doubt there is a better target to sharpen your ability to freeze a bird in flight than a skittish warbler.  I’m happy with the results seen in this portrait of a yellow-rumped warbler.  I confess, I am shooting near a pinecone feeder we have behind the house.   Interestingly this warbler hovers in the air near the cone and sporadically dips in for a bite.  Still, it moves incredibly quickly and freezing it in mid-air and in mid-wingbeat took a lot of patience.  Getting beyond the how, the image is one I am proud of.  We don’t get to see this handsome bird in such detail very often.
