Hurricane Erin Surfing

August 25, 2025

Hurricane Erin cast a wake of very large waves for several days along the Delaware and Maryland beaches.  The day that the eye of the storm was due east of the DE/MD coast high winds made for a very choppy condition along with huge waves (see my last post), with a similar wind condition the next day.  High NE wind accompanied by gray skies was an uninviting setup for this photographer to search for people surfing the heavy surf the second day too.  I opted for the next day when the sun was out, the wind was light and offshore but good size waves were still around.  I started in Ocean City where it was backlit in the early hours of the day while mist from the breaking waves filled the air. The images represent the feeling of the morning, seen in the first two photos.  The third shot was at Indian River Inlet a little later in the morning where, from my shooting angle, it was clearer and the sun was a little higher.  Pretty nice, very surfable waves for August on our coast.
