Rodent Tossing

January 29, 2026

The woods behind my house are rich with wildlife activity.  This morning, seen out of my back window while enjoying a hot cup of coffee and not too long after sunrise, a fox was toying with its morning breakfast.  I guess this is a white footed mouse (please correct me if you know) that the fox was tossing in the air over and over again before carrying off to eat.  I keep my Nikon z9 with its 100-400 mm zoom lens and 1.5 tele on a table near the back windows and deck ‘just in case’.   So, through the window, hand held and about 50 yards from the fox I shot the action.  I hurried to start photographing because, as you wildlife photographers know, good action often ends too quickly and I have often missed the good shot by just a second or so.  Today the fox kept up the action and, while the technical photography skills are lacking a bit (if only I could have been out on the deck, camera on a tripod and probably a little faster ISO) I am pretty happy with the action captured despite the images being a little under my preferred standard.  It’s a case of subject better than tech quality.  I am thankful for the experience I witnessed and got to shoot.
