To Be AI or Not To Be

June 10, 2025

It has been reported, recently, that AI will threaten white collar workers much as automation replaced so many manual labor jobs decades ago.  I enjoy writing brief text that accompanies my photos.  Sometimes my words are very brief and sometimes I share deeper thoughts related to a posted picture.  Being down to the last few days of astronomical spring I decide to let ChatGPT write a description for me about the beauty and wildlife in a spring marsh.  The paragraph below is what it created in a matter of seconds. While it’s a pretty good write up it is a little scary that a program did so well.  AI will indeed do the job many people do now.  The photos here are all mine, created in camera, in field. For me that will never change and, although an easy way out, I will most always write using MY brain, not AI’s.

In spring, the marsh awakens with quiet splendor, transforming into a vibrant mosaic of life and color. New grasses and reeds push through the soft, damp earth, painting the landscape with fresh greens that shimmer in the breeze. Birds return in flocks, their calls echoing across the open water and among the cattails—herons, egrets, and red-winged blackbirds all finding refuge and nourishment in this rich habitat. Frogs sing from hidden shallows, turtles bask on sun-warmed logs, and the air hums with the activity of insects and pollinators. The marsh, teeming with life, becomes a sanctuary of renewal, where every ripple, rustle, and birdsong speaks of nature’s resilience and the quiet, enduring beauty of spring.
