Tale Of The Long Tails

January 6, 2026

It is yet another gray, cloudy, dreary weather day here on the Delmarva Peninsula.   I am usually pretty picky about the quality of light in my photography (all my photographer friends say in chorus, ah duh, who amongst us isn’t) so a dull gray day such as today could logically be a day to stay away from wildlife photography.  HOWEVER, a day without shadows can be used to one’s advantage.  There is a good sized population of Long-tailed Ducks fishing Indian River (DE) Inlet now and I thought I would go down in the middle of the day to see if there were any subjects worth shooting. The Long-tails dove, fished, surfaced and dove again, rinse and repeat quite literally, over and over again. Occasionally they would pick up and fly to another spot in the inlet to continue the apparently never ending search for food.  I was lucky to have a drake and hen fly by me close enough to ‘shoot on the wing’ as they passed.  I like the results with no shadows but I can’t decide if I like them better with wings up and down in one photo ot wings all up in the other.  Which one do you like better?
